About us

The Windward Grille, formerly the Hearthside Restaurant, is nestled in the historic ship building town of Essex, 26 miles North of Boston, MA. Come dine in the warmth of an Old New England Farmhouse, built in 1680. The main house is over 300 years old. The reconstructed New England barn is an elegant bar and lounge area with dining in the loft above.

The Windward Grille is open 7 days a week, Monday-Sunday. Lunch and dinner are served daily. The Windward Grille offers an array of steaks, seafood and more. Reservations are welcome. GA certificates are available.

We look forward to having you dine with us. After your dining experience you can visit many old New England homes and browse through the charming antique stores in the area.

Testimonials

Like the Century House in Peabody, this is an older set crowd but the food here is amazing. Terrific service, quiet and set in an (1700's?) converted farmhouse. Quaint and charming with amazing food and a limited but excellent wine selection. We go on special occasions since it can get pricey especially if you are having alcohol with your meal. Highly recommend the tenderloin with asparagus and goat cheese appetizer and or the scallops wrapped in bacon appetizer. De-lish!

Just discovered this little gem on the MA coast. Seafood Audrey is fantastic; the atmosphere is lovely, everything was clean, well-maintained and the staff were very pleasant. My only issue seemed to be the time betweeen ordering and receiving the meal. Seemed to be a tad long. The dining room was hopping though, and the wait staff was ALWAYS hustling. No one was ignoring us. I have told everyone at work when in the Essex area; make sure you have a meal here.
